Nuclear power plants generated a third of the clean energy in 2019
Based on the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) report published at the beginning of this year, at the end of 2019 450 nuclear reactors operated worldwide with 398,9 GW capacity, which was a 2,5 GW increase compared to the previus year.
10% of global electricity was generated in nuclear power plants, however this is a third of the climate friendly electricity generation. Internationally nuclear energy is the second biggest carbonfree energy source following hydro energy.
In 2019 30 countries had nuclear power plants in operation, and further 28 planned or were actively working on it to introduce nuclear energy to their energy mix. Four of them – Bangladesh, Turkey, Belarus and United Arab Emirates – construct the first nuclear power plant of the respective country, in the last two the projects are nearing the completion.
Based on the International Atomic Energy Agency’s data in 2019 5 reactors (2640 MW total capacity) were shut down permanently. Also 5 reactors were connected to grid – among them a floating power plant – with a total 5146 MW capacity, which is almost the double of the shut down capacity. Also in 2019 nuclear power plant constructions started at three sites.
