The soil excavation up to the design level has started

Deepening of the excavation pit is continuing for the planned Unit 5 – Péter Szijjártó announced.

Through the works now underway the excavation pit of Paks II. Nuclear Power Plant will reach depths of up to 23 metres in some places. The deepening of the excavation pit started in 2022, first up to the groundwater level, to a depth of five meters. Following this the construction of the cut-off wall and the soil improvement have been completed and on 24 September the so-called soil excavation up to the design level has started.

– After excavating 1,5 million cubic meters of soil, an additional 2 million cubic meters of soil will be excavated – the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó said. He added, following the excavation works, the first concrete pour can take place.
 

The minister underlined this is also important because according to the terminology of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) the nuclear power plant is considered to be under construction from the first concrete pouring. Péter Szijjártó highlighted that German, French, American, Swiss, Austrian and Hungarian subcontractors are cooperating effectively in the international nuclear project led by the Russian contractor.
