Another thirty-two students graduate from the Paks II Academy

A total of thirty-two students have successfully passed their final exams in the last few weeks in the Paks II Academy.

Three universities - the University of Dunaújváros, the University of Debrecen and the University of Miskolc - have successfully completed the third year of the Paks II Academy. This time, a total of 32 students successfully passed the final exams of the nuclear power plant operation engineer and technician courses.

More than 100 nuclear professionals from 22 countries on four continents participate in person or online at the CAMP (Code Application and Maintenance Program) conference in Budapest, which kicked off on 23 May. The collaboration, coordinated by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), has been developing computer codes to perform various nuclear safety assessments since the 1970s. These thermohydraulics and neutron kinetics codes, which are recognized worldwide in professional circles, have been available to Hungarian experts since the 1990s. The current meeting is not only important for the promotion of scientific exchange, it is also topical because the independent safety analyses of the two VVER-1200 units to be built at Paks, are being carried out by Hungarian experts using, among other things, the codes provided by CAMP.

The Paks II Academy was established by Paks II Ltd. in cooperation with several Hungarian universities to promote the training of nuclear specialists.


The construction and operation of a nuclear power plant requires many well-trained professionals. In order to provide the necessary skilled personnel, Paks II Ltd. has set up various training programmes. One of these is the Paks II Academy, which provides those with specific Bsc diplomas with a two-semester course of basic knowledge of the technological processes of the nuclear power plant, the basics of nuclear safety, the safe operation of the nuclear power plant and the operational procedures. The courses are delivered in a wide range of collaborative activities, providing students with a highly practical knowledge of this segment of the energy industry.



– It is a great opportunity for us to learn from the best experts in the nuclear power plant construction project, supervised by our company, even at the preparatory stage, and to adopt their good practices – Gergely Jákli emphasised at the opening of the conference. The Chairman-CEO of Paks II. Ltd. added: – International cooperation permeates our everyday life, as we are adding components from Western European and US suppliers to Rosatom's primary circuit technology during the construction of the two new units.

CAMP Project Manager Chris Hoxie, told the press that thirty countries from all over the world are participating in the CAMP cooperation. – Together we are stronger and can achieve a higher degree of safety than if we all work alone – he said, adding that he is honoured to continue this fruitful cooperation and exchange of experience with the world's best nuclear engineers this time in Hungary.

On the final day of the conference, participants will also visit the Paks Nuclear Power Plant and see the works at the site of the new units.Thanks to Paks II Ltd., the training is free of charge for the students up to a certain number per institution. In addition, the company also provides a professional background for the programme itself. 

Paks II. professionals acted as consultants to help the students write their theses. 


In the framework of the programme, the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, the University of Pécs and the University of Pannonia are currently running further training courses, while the University of Dunaújváros, the University of Miskolc and the University of Debrecen are planning to launch further cross-semester courses. One can apply at the institution of their choice.
