The third 3+ generation NPP unit started its operation in Russia
The newest energy generating unit of the Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant started its commercial operation on 1 November 2019, 30 days before the deadline. The Federal Environmental, Industrial and Nuclear Supervision Service of Russia, the Rostechnadzor previously issued the license for it, meaning the NPP unit meets every requirement set in the design, technical and energy efficiency regulations and legislation.
This is the third 3+ gen NPP unit operating in Russia, it has been generating electricity since 1 May 2019. The first one was also commissioned here in 2016, the second, the 1st unit of Leningrad II, following its connection to the grid in 2017, started its commercial operation in last October – said Rosatom.
The VVER-1200 type NPP unit, using state-of-the-art technology, has a unique combination of active and passive safety systems, which makes the nuclear power plant resistant to external and internal impacts. Passive safety systems are capable of cooling the unit in case of total power failure or without operator intervention – says the announcement.
The technical-economical traits of the innovative, 3+ generation NPP units (which are the reference units for Paks II. Nuclear Power Plant) grant an absolutely safe operation.
