Paks II. Ltd. pays special attention to the preservation of protected plant species beside the fauna of the site of the new nuclear power plant units and also of the site of the construction works. In line with the environmental and nature conservation regulations of the environmental license that came into force in 2017, having the necessary permits, the preservation of the species inhabiting the area is taken care of.

Baranya County Goverment Office issued the environmental license required for the construction and operation of the two new nuclear power plant units on 29 September 2016, which came into force in 2017. Its environmental and nature conservation regulations define those nature protection tasks, which need to be done before the construction works.

During the nature conservation field survey held at the end of April 2018, it was established again that the protected orphan maidenhair (Stipa pennata) can be found in the area. The gene pool of the species can be kept most effectively by seed collection.

For the seed collection of the protected orphan maidenhair Tolna County Government Office’s Szekszárd District Office issued a nature protection permit, while the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Centre for Ecological Research Institute of Ecology and Botany issued a receiving notice. Following this the seed collection started.

After several field surveys on 16 and 17 May 2018 under appropriate circumstances the seed collection started, as the seeds were ripe and the weather was favorable for the task. The experts collected about 27.000 seeds during these two days. The seeds with feathery flowering spikes were transported to Vácrátót, according to the regulations, to the restoration seed bank of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences Centre for Ecological Research Institute of Ecology and Botany. Proper storage of the seeds ensures the preservation of the genetic material of the protected plants by sowing the seeds following the completion of the investment, thus ensuring the survival of the population in the area.
