Soil excavation down to the 23-meter level has been completed
In October, excavation works were completed in the area of Unit 6. Approximately 411,000 cubic meters of soil were removed to create a 23-meter-deep excavation pit, which will accommodate the second unit of the Paks II. Nuclear Power Plant. Building on previous experience during this work phase, which began in March 2026, a soil-milling excavation technology was applied. This approach optimized processes, thereby enhancing efficiency, construction quality, and, importantly, occupational safety. Furthermore, the planned geodetic and geotechnical monitoring systems have been installed, along with the protective surface mesh.
Construction is also underway in the area of Unit 5: nearly 70 percent of the foundations of the buildings on the common foundation slab of the nuclear island have been completed.
These operations began in early February in the area of the control building. The first bay of the reactor building foundation slab was poured at the end of July, while the final bay was completed in mid-October. The construction of the remaining smaller bays is expected to be completed by the end of November. To date, more than 7,200 tonnes of reinforcement steel have been installed, and 16,900 cubic metres of concrete have been poured into the foundation structure of the nuclear island for Unit 5.
The works are being carried out with the necessary regulatory permits under the supervision of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority.
