Global Record in Nuclear Electricity Generation

In 2025, nuclear power plants worldwide generated more electricity than at any time in history.

According to the latest World Nuclear Outlook report published by the World Nuclear Association (WNA), nuclear facilities generated a total of 2,702 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity last year, surpassing the previous record of 2,667 TWh set in 2024.

According to the WNA, nuclear energy is playing an increasingly important role in strengthening energy security, ensuring affordable electricity supplies and supporting climate goals. Currently, 38 countries support the ambition to triple global nuclear energy capacity by 2050. The report notes that if countries deliver on their nuclear energy plans and targets, global nuclear capacity could even exceed this objective.

Commenting on the report, WNA Director General Sama Bilbao y León said:
"This is an extraordinary moment for nuclear energy. Reflecting on another year of record performance, and looking ahead to a future of record ambition, governments are clear: they need much more nuclear energy to address the interconnected challenges of energy security, affordability, competitiveness and climate goals.”

The report also highlights the strong operational performance of nuclear power plants worldwide. In 2025, the global average capacity factor of nuclear reactors reached 83.7%, demonstrating the reliability and continuous generating capability of nuclear energy.
The momentum behind nuclear development is also reflected in new investment activity. In 2025, the construction of eleven new reactor units was commenced, while the total nuclear capacity under construction reached 82 gigawatts electric (GWe).
